❶ When I originally wrote these sentences myself (before Vesta went over them with me), I used the word 若然 that I found in the dictionary, but she said that is only used in ancient texts. You can see that it still has the same first character as the way she recommended to say things.
❷ Traditionally 孫子 refers to a male grandchild. If you add 們 ㄇㄣ˙ (men.) for the plural 孫子們, it is inclusive of male and female. 孫女 ㄙㄨㄣ ㄋㄩ (sūn nǚ) specifically means granddaughter. 外孫 ㄨㄞˋ ㄙㄨㄣ (wài sūn) can be used to indicate the grandson of my daughter, but in recent times it is fairly common to use 孫子 generically.
❸ For a more in depth look how to use the correct words when talking about making things, see How Things Are Made 如何製成物品 in Chinese.
❹ Adding 野外 as a descriptor here is optional. It would depend on things like who you are talking to and how specific you need to be.
❺ For this sentence, I learned that 口袋 can be used when speaking of any kind of pocket, but 衣袋 specifically means a pocket on clothing.
❻ 帳篷 would be used for any kind of tent. If you need to clarify whether it be for camping or military campaigns or even nomads in the desert, you would add other words.
❼ This word is specifically used for putting on things like hats and gloves that are not worn to the same degree as clothing, such as shirts and pants.
❽ The characters in 手套 are individually translated, in order, as hand and case/cover. When you realize that 套 is also used in the word for coat, 外套 ㄨㄞˋ ㄊㄠˋ (wài tào), it can be a fun way to remember 手套, as a hand coat.
❾ In both of these words the 兒 is part of the accent in northern China and has no particular meaning to the words. 鳥兒 is an example of a pronunciation that has also become common in Taiwan.
❿ Once again we have a word that uses the same character as used in the word for movie, 電影 ㄉㄧㄢˋ ㄧㄥˇ (diàn yǐng), which can be literally translated as electricity shadow or shadow made using electricity. In 身影 it literally mean body shadow.
⓫ 石子 is used here instead of 石頭 ㄕˊ ㄊㄡˊ (shí tóu) because 石頭 could be a rock of any size, including large boulders, whereas implies something small enough to be held in the hand.
⓬ Here you have the very common 中 being used instead of 裡 to mean in. They can basically be used interchangeably, although 中 can give more of a sense of being more solidly in or nestled in securely.
⓭ You can use 接近 to talk about just about anything approaching, from a certain time period to a person to an object.
⓮ The structure of this phrase here is 用。。。來.
⓯ Choosing a word for marshmallow was tricky because the dictionary used the same word for cotton candy as for marshmallow: 棉花糖 ㄇㄧㄢ ˊ ㄏㄨㄚ ㄊㄤˊ (mián huā táng) . Vesta says marshmallows are basically non-existent in China, so no word has really been established. She would rather describe them as soft candy, taking out the character 花, for flower, and using only the character 棉 for cotton that can also mean padded or quilted. This removes some of the imagery of cotton flowering on the plant, which is more the look of typical cotton candy as most Americans and Chinese know it.
