結束 ㄐㄧㄝˊ ㄕㄨˋ (jié shù) the end
❶ We had quite a discussion about getting the correct vocabulary for this, since Vesta is not a horse person. Things were confused by the fact that the dictionaries all seem to use the same Chinese for all multiple English words. That is, halter, bridle, and reins were all translated the same.
We looked at Chinese and Taiwanese websites for selling horse paraphernalia and found that Vesta’s vocabulary choice was common. 馬籠頭套 is also one of the descriptions on websites selling halters and bridles.
馬 ㄇㄚˇ mǎ horse
龍 ㄌㄨㄥˊ lóng neck
頭 ㄊㄡˊ tóu head
套 ㄊㄠˋ tào sheath
So, all together, very literally it means a horse’s head-neck sheath.
That all led Vesta to explain to me the term for “turtle neck sweater” in Chinese. Chinese does not use “turtle” in the name at all: 套頭毛衣
You may notice that the first two characters are used in the references to horse halters. The second two characters mean sweater due to the combination of the character 毛 for hair, feather, or fur and the character 衣 for clothing.
❷ This is the same 結 used in 結婚 ㄐㄧㄝˊ ㄏㄨㄣ which means to get married.
❸ If I was talking about her mane, the word would have been 鬃毛 which is in the vocabulary chart.
❹ Recall that the Chinese 牠 for animals is gender neutral and would technically be translated as it. However, that’s often not how we talk in English about our animals, so her is a smoother translation in this case.
❺ Another vocabulary choice here was 妖怪 ㄧㄠ ㄍㄨㄞˋ (yāo guài), but this would be more sinister and devilish. The word we used means monster in more of a freakish way, without involvement in the spiritual realm.
❻ It is fun to remember that the character 跳 is also used in the Chinese word 跳舞, which means to dance. The 舞 ㄨˇ (wǔ) specifically means to dance or to brandish.
❼ Here Vesta pointed out that 溫柔 is NOT the word you would use to speak of tender meat, which is 嫰 or 嫩 ㄋㄣˋ (nèn).
❽ 解開 can also be used when talking about resolving misunderstandings or misapprehensions.
❾ Sometimes a different order of characters changes the meaning, but not in this case. This word is the same as 導引 or 引導.
❿ In Chinese, the verb 乘騎, meaning to ride, cannot be used as a noun like ride can be in English. That is why the word 經驗, which means experience, had to be added to the sentence.
⓫ 就行 is more common on mainland China. You could also say 就可以 or 就好. They all mean the same thing.
⓬ This is a synonym for 放 ㄈㄤˋ (fàng)
