(you)(think to want)(more)(to do)(some + MW for affair)(affair, matter, business, thing)

You want to do more of something

Sometimes we want to do more of something than we are, like practice more or save more. A basic Chinese sentence structure for this is:

(subject)多(verb)(conjunction)(subject)(desired result)

To broadly translate this structure: someone wants to engage in more of a particular activity so that they and/or someone else will be likely to obtain a certain outcome.

First, here is some specific vocabulary used in the sentences. If you spend a little time practicing listening to it (and trying to say it), it will be easier to understand the sentences later. In the translations of the vocabulary, I have strictly used the dictionary tones of the characters, but you will see that in the sentences below I have adjusted the third tones right before other third tones in a word to be the appropriate second tone.

Notes:

❶ You will probably notice that these first two sentences are only different in the phrase describing the result, and the small change does not change the meaning a lot.

❷ This is one of those cases where sometimes people only use one of the characters of the verb and other times two. My tutor says it just depends on a person’s speaking habits.

❸ The most complete way to say “when” in Chinese is to use the whole phrase 的時候 (de. shí hoù), however it is common to shorten it to just the character 時 (shì) which means “time.”

❹ In English, we tend to universally use the verb “to play” for all instruments, but in Chinese the verbs have more to do with exactly how the sound is made on the instrument.
