生詞 ㄕㄥ ㄘˊ (shēng cí) New Word(s)/Vocabulary
Here are some ways to say you are just arriving or will be right there. The translations are accurate, but they could be translated with different English words to mean the same basic thing:
就到了！(jiù dào le.) Almost there!
就來了！(jiù lái le.) Coming!
馬上來！(mǎ shàng lái) Coming at once!
立刻來！(lì ke lái) Coming promptly!
我們恨快就到了！(wǒ men. hěn kuài jiù dào le.) We will be there quickly!
Other vocabulary, some in the blog and some related to the subject:
網路 (wǎng lù) net + road = internet
瞭解 (liǎo jiě) to understand, to comprehend
接著 (jiē zhe.) shortly, then, to follow
容易地 (róng yì de.) easily
迷路 (mí lù) to get lost
說真的 (shuō zhēn de.) honestly, frankly
困難 (kùn nán) difficulty
實在 (shí zài) truly, really
地圖 (dì tú) map
指路 (zhǐ lù) directions
地址 (dì zhǐ) address
路口 (lù kǒu) intersection
第三條街 (dì sān tiáo jiē) the third street
馬路 (mǎ lù) (horse) road
街道 (jiē dào) street
計程車 (jì chéng chē) taxi *Taiwan
出租車 (chū zū chē) taxi *Shanghai
方便 (fāng biàn) convenient
立刻 (lì kè) immediately, promptly, at once
❶ 就 ㄐㄧㄡˋ (jiù) is often part of the sentence for the flow and complete understanding in Chinese. It is not always directly translated into English, but it is at least implied by common English understand. My tutor compared it to how “that” is used in English all the time, but doesn’t really translate into Chinese.
❷ 說真的 ㄕㄨㄛ ㄓㄣ ㄉㄜ˙ (shuō zhēn de.) is only found at the beginning of sentences, much like we say “frankly” or “honestly” when we start a sentence in English.
❸ The word order in this sentence could also be 請問我現在在哪裡. It is more obvious that the double 在 ㄗㄞˋ (zài) is not a mistake (for the newer learner) if the 我 ㄨㄛˇ (wǒ) is between them.
❹ 地 ㄉㄧˋ (dì) means “earth” or “land” so the literal translations of both words it is used in here are kind of fun: 地方 ㄉㄧˋ ㄈㄤ (dì fāng) “earth place” is location, and 地圖 ㄉㄧˋ ㄊㄨˊ (dì tú) “earth picture” is map.
❺ The first character in this word is that for “finger” 指 ㄓˇ (zhǐ), while the second character means “road” 路ㄌㄨˋ(lù), so the word for giving directions gives the mental picture of pointing down the road.
❻ Although both 馬路 ㄇㄚˇ ㄌㄨˋ (mǎ lù) and 街道 ㄐㄧㄝ ㄉㄠˋ (jiē dào) technically mean “road or street”, 馬路 ㄇㄚˇ ㄌㄨˋ (mǎ lù) implies a road “large enough for horses and the vehicles they might pull.” 街道 ㄐㄧㄝ ㄉㄠˋ (jiē dào) implies narrower streets, such as people might be inclined to walk along and might have shops 逛街 ㄍㄨㄤˊ ㄐㄧㄝ (guáng jiē), to go window shopping.
❼ Whereas in English “turning” implies going toward something, in Chinese it is normal to specify the going toward as well. That is why 往 ㄨㄤˇ (wǎng) is part of this sentence as well as 右轉 ㄧㄡˋ ㄓㄨㄢˇ (yòu zhuǎn) “right turn”.
❽ See note ❻ to understand why both words for road are used here.
❾ Two words for “taxi” are listed in the vocabulary, one for Taiwan and one for Shanghai. They are both very descriptive of what a taxi does and make the English word seem a little plain!
The one used in Shanghai is 出租車 ㄔㄨ ㄗㄨ ㄔㄜ (chū zū chē), which is literally “to go out for rent car.”
❿ The grammar of Chinese is such that commas are often used for pauses where there might be periods at the end of sentences in English.
⓫ The use of 方便 ㄈㄤ ㄅㄧㄢˋ (fāng biàn) is much like just saying “please,” but it a usually added for emphasis of politeness in Taiwan.
