Extended Chinese Vocabulary and Grammar from the Children’s Book 爺爺我愛你

vocab 爺爺我愛你

Last week, I practiced reading the Chinese translation of My Grandpa, by Marta Altes, one of the books I mentioned in my post about using children’s books to study Chinese. The title in Chinese is 爺爺我愛你, which is translated literally below:

爺爺我愛你

(爺爺)(我)(愛)(你)

(ye2 ye.) (wo3) (ai4) (ni3)

(grandpa on your father’s side) (I) (love) (you)

Grandpa, I Love You

The Chinese translation is more reflective of the contents of the book. I did my reading out loud, by myself during the week, then for my tutor during the lesson. I am pleased to say she only made one or two corrections to my pronunciation.

After reading through it, she explained some of the Chinese words choices more thoroughly. We also practiced building some sentences based on the grammar of and concepts in the book. Those words, phrases, and sentences are typed here, and there is an audio of them below. (There will be a couple of minor corrections made to the audio in a day or two. Maybe you can test if you can here where it varies slightly from the text below? The text is correct)

Here is the audio of my tutor reading the Chinese. (As noted above, there will be a couple of minor corrections made to the audio in a day or two. Maybe you can test if you can here where it varies slightly from the text above? The text is correct)

:

A couple of notes:

❶ Another way to say this would be 全天下 (quan2 tian1 xia4) “under all of heaven”.

❷ “as soon as” is one of the possible meanings of 一 (yi1), which most beginning learners will more readily recognize as the number “1”.

❸ The connotation of 要 (yao4) is something that just has to be picked up with practice in conversation. Its tone of emphasis will vary with the verb it is being used with. Thus, if you say 不要走路 (bu2 yao4 zou3 lu4), it is “Please, don’t walk,” more of a request. However, if you say 不要說謊 (bu2 yao4 shuo1 huang3), it is stating more emphatically  “Don’t lie to me!”
