Chinese breakfast vocabulary

This is vocabulary that came up while we were discussing breakfast recently, which I used to write the blog about Deciding What to Eat for Breakfast. To help me practice listening and repeating, my tutor recorded it.

 

吃過早餐了嗎?(chi1 guo4) (zao3 can1) (le.) (ma.) Have you eaten breakfast?

吃過早飯了嗎?(chi1 gou4) (zao3 fan4) (le.) (ma.) Have you eaten breakfast?

 

一般美國人的早餐吃什麼?

(yi1 ban4) (mei3 guo2 ren2) (de.) (zao3 can1) (chi1) (shen2 me.)

What do Americans commonly eat for breakfast?

 

煙薰 (yan1 xun1) smoked

煙薰鹹豬肉片 (yan1 xun1) (xian2) (zhu1 rou4) (pian4) smoked salty pig meat pieces = bacon

香腸 (xiang1 chang2)  sweet smelling intestines = sausage

德國香腸  (de2 guo2) (xiang1 chang2) German sausage

 

土司 (tu3 si1) toast, bread  [see notes for: Deciding What to Eat for Breakfast]

烤土司 (kao3 tu3 si1) cooked toast

 

有時候一杯咖啡,兩片烤土司,三條煙薰鹹豬肉片

(you3 shi2 hou4) (yi4 bei1) (ka1 fei1), (liang3) (pian4) (kao3 tu3 si1), (san1) (tiao1) (yan1 xun1 xian2 zhu1 rou4 pian4)

Sometimes one cup of coffee, two pieces of toast, three strips of bacon.

 

煙薰 (yan1 xun1) smoked

煙薰鮭魚 (yan1 xun1) (gui1 yu2) smoked salmon or trout

 

我很喜歡煎蛋 (wo3) (hen3) (xi3 huan1) (jian1 dan4)

I like fried eggs very much.

 

煎 (jian1) to fry, but not with too much oil

炸 (zha4) to fry with more oil

炸 (zha2) variant tone, still means fried with more oil

炒 (chao3) stir fry

 

煎蛋餅 (jian1 dan4) (bing3) fried egg cake or anything round and flat

煎蔥油餅 (jian1) (cong1 you2) (bing3) fried onion pancake

 

台灣人不喜歡冷的食物 (tai2 wan1 ren2) (bu4) (xi3 huan1) (leng3 de.) (shi2 wu4)

Taiwanese people don’t like cold food.

 

大部分台灣人不喜歡冷的食物(da4 bu4 fen4) (tai2 wan1 ren2) (bu4) (xi3 huan1) (leng3 de.) (shi2 wu4),

The majority of Taiwanese people don’t like cold food.

 

可能除了沙拉以外,大部分台灣人不喜歡冷的食物

With the exception of salad, most Taiwanese people don’t like cold food.

抹 (mo3) to spread, to smear, put on top

塗 (tu2) to spread, to smear, put on top
